Community/Football Facility
Linwood has a very active youth
football community with over 600 youngsters involved in teams that have been in
existence for more than 40 years. In
addition, over 50 volunteers each offer up in excess of ten hours per week to
support the needs of our young people.
At present, the lack of appropriate, affordable facilities in Linwood means that Linwood footballers have to travel out with their own community to train and play matches.
When it was announced that a new, state-of-the-art Sports Hub was to be built in Linwood, it was hoped that among the facilities on offer would be an all-weather pitch suitable for football training and playing home matches. Sadly, this was not to be the case. Whilst the proposed pitch would allow for training, its composition would be such that it would not be recognised by the Scottish Football Authority as suitable for match play.
Linwood Community Development Trust attempted to have this decision changed, but to no avail.
Combined with this, the decision to demolish the community centre, which had served the community for some 45 years, led LCDT to believe that many local community groups would struggle to continue owing to the lack of available, affordable space to meet.
In order to meet the needs of the community, the Trust has acquired 3 hectares of land at Mossedge and secured £1.4m of funding to build a full-size 3G community football pitch and community facility which will:
- Provide ownership of land, leased by the community, for the community
- Provide affordable facilities in the heart of the community
- Reduce travelling time for families
- Lower carbon emissions
- Provide activities and a meeting place for all age groups to come together
- Generate income for Linwood
